‘Hedda’ Review: ‘HEDDA GABLER’ Meets ‘Salt’ in Nia Dicosta’s Sexy, Sapphic Adaptation

Hedda Gabler is a brilliant person, and Tessa Thompson was born to play her. First revealed to the world in the Titar 1891 Play by Henrik IBSEN, Hedda Gabler would go on to become a compelling figure and connect the Blancrings, removing Blanchett – giving up the opportunity to play her. But Thompson, in Nia Dacosta’s Fiery Reimagining Heddait takes this role in new rich and wild places, and it is Satan’s delight to witness.

They all played women who were dangerous, devilish, and saviors, and we love them every wild moment.

Fresh from her idealistic but boring husband George Tesman (Tom Bateman), the smitten Hedda (Thompson) is eager to show off their ghastly sensible home, complete with full lawn and pool. But before the party can even arrive, worries become a problem with the arrival of some unwanted guests. And he gets a warm welcome from hedda.

The powerful and opportunistic judge Roland Brack Brack (Nicholas Pinnock) comes with troubling news and flowery eyes, Hedda meets the gunfire of the soldiers at her end. When Eileen arrives at Hedda’s party, she is a feminist writer. Cosume Designer Lindsay Pugh Dresches Hoss dressed heavy and delicate, set her broad shoulders and strong fullness. He looks like a powerful ship detail, ready to prepare for an unknown future. Unfortunately for him, Hedda has plans, treating every member of this packed crew as her dark playground.

Pulled on silk gloves, pearls, and deer clothes and matched to perfection, hedda is beautiful and elegant. He confronts his children. She wears a lock on her chest that is depressed in her décolletage. And he collects all the blood red spots that perfectly express Thompson’s Signature Smirk. From her first appearance, Hedda clearly lives in trouble.

The boundaries that whisper secrets will disrupt its painful intensity, which seems to be a glint like a knife’s edge in Thompson’s eyes – even when all smiles on his guests. But the essence of Hedda Gabler it is a razor-sharp wit that has been seduced by unsanitary brutality. The world dares to bear Hedda, so she will watch you with burning joy. Thompson captures this devil-may-care attitude, whether it’s a dance floor, a caper through a hedge maze, or a fatal small talk escape. There is a lovely freedom in HEDDA’s reign at such times. But in his vulnerable moments, it’s clear that he’s in his own fish cage with no easy way out. Therefore, they are not in the scriptures but by those who love them.

While the other actors played a supporting role, Thompson Hedda has a ball raising hell, and it’s fun to watch. You are lit in desire, be it sexual, with candles, or self-harm. And with every raised eyebrow, sultry smirk, or pointed barb, it’s hilarious. POSS to hoss, who plays the only character who can match Hedda’s will. The hoss exudes a bewildering confidence, and shares a sexually suggestive gaze with Thompson – and poots, for that matter. With his strong screen presence, he ties the love story together, because who would not be destroyed by this Eleen?

Although set on an English Estate, Dacosta defies the stereotypes and banality of many British clips. HEDDA’s Barbs can be sparky at times, but her movie is full of attitude, energy, and color. Cinematographer Sean Bobbitt chases this around the house, as if an envious person wants to look at him. The surprise of the camera movement as it pans over her face, her guardian, and her circle of re-enactors shows HEDDA’s control over her circle. The color palette of the film is rich in golden hues, warm and better to enhance a bright cheek or a happy chest. And perhaps on a symbolic level this hue reminds the viewer, “all that glitters is not gold.”

Production design and costumes that attack sexuality and evil – skipping, pearls, and prints decorate every limb, wall, and surface. Captured through Bobbitt’s lens, you can feel the lace, velvet, and taffeta readily available. Hedda Gabler is an iconic role, one that has fascinated audiences and great actors for generations with her ferocity and irresistible charm. Here, Dacosta and Thompson make her their own, twisting the themes of queenness, race and gender politics with aplomb, and a twist on Ibsen’s original story. In this way, Hedda’s rage becomes more precise and universal, while remaining timeless.

But even if you have never seen a Hedda Gablereasy to cross Hedda. Rare, hot, and challenging, this is a drama of love, sex, and regret that burns like a shot of whiskey, so good you’ll want to go.

Hedda it was reviewed at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie will open in the US in select theaters on Oct. 22, with an extension on Oct. 29.
