Pope Leo XIV pushes back on US bishops’ condemnation of Trump’s immigration

Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday firmly confirmed the message of the Bishops’ approach to the immigration authorities of the Trump Administration, calling on Americans to listen to migrants and treat them with dignity and help.
The Pope was asked for a “special message” by the US conference of Catholic Bishops Katoor last week in Baltimore.
The bishops blasted President Donald Trump’s Mass Report Agenda and “surveillance” of migrants, expressed concern over fear and migration attacks killing communities, and the denial of teachers to migrants in detention centers.
“We are disturbed when we see among our people a climate of fear and anxiety about questions of conflict with the decline of migration,” said the statement of the bishops. “We are saddened by the state of the modern debate and alienation. We are concerned about the conditions in the detention centers and the lack of care for the elderly,”

Leo, the first American Pope, said he appreciates the message of the US bishop and encouraged Catholics and all people who are interested to listen to immigrants with dignity, even if they are in the country illegally.
“I think we should look for ways to treat people individually, treat people with the dignity they have,” he told reporters. “If people are in the United States illegally, there are remedies for that. There are courts, there is a justice system.”
The pope once urged local bishops to talk about social justice concerns. Catholic leaders have criticized Trump’s mass deportation plan, as fears of revival have reached the country where mass attacks are taking place in other regions.

The Federal Government previously returned the sign of the Biden Administration Design to prohibit immigration agents from carrying out attacks in sensitive areas such as churches, schools and hospitals.
Leo acknowledged the problems with the US immigration system, but emphasized that no one is against the US to have open borders and that all countries may choose what they can fit into those ways of doing so.

“I just invite everyone in the United States to listen to them,” Leo said.
The bishops’ “Special Message” was the first time since 2013 that they have written a statement that is not one of their meetings.
