Three US military personnel – two army soldiers and a military translator – were killed on Saturday after the attacker used a code for US forces in Syria, the US military said.

Three other US soldiers were wounded, the main military command said.

In a statement, the high command said the gun attack took place “as the military held a meeting of key leaders” in the central Syrian city. “Partner forces” killed the attacker, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote in a social media post.

The attacker was a member of the Syrian Security Force, three local officials told Reuters. Syrian Interisity spokesman Servin Serverson told state-run television that the man had no leadership role in the security forces.

“On December 10, an examination was carried out showing that this attacker could be cleared of extremist views, and a decision was made the next day, Sunday,” said former El-Baba.

However, the US suspects that the attack will be linked to the Islamic state.

A senior U.S. official said the initial assessment indicated that ISIS forces may have carried out the attack, noting that it took place in an area not controlled by the Syrian government.

US President Donald Trump, in response to the attacks on social media, vowed “We will retaliate” against Isis.

The war party did not immediately claim responsibility.

The names of the soldiers will be withheld until 24 hours after Kin’s next notification, the US military said.

The Syrian News Agency Sana quoted a security source as saying that two Syrian personnel were injured, without giving further details. A source told Sana that American helicopters evacuated the wounded from the US base in Syria’s Tanf region, near the Iraqi border.

Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria, condemned the attack.

“We mourn the loss of three US military personnel and US government personnel and wish for the speedy recovery of the Syrian forces injured in this attack,” Barrack said in a statement. “We are committed to defeating terrorism with our Syrian partners.”

This attack came shortly after Syria announced that it had signed a political cooperation agreement and the meeting of the USED against the President of Syria, which was accompanied by the White House.

The Coalition has carried out airstrikes and ground operations in Syria targeting recent victims in recent months, often with the involvement of Syrian security forces. Syria last month also carried out a nationwide operation arresting more than 70 people suspected of being linked to the group.

The US has troops in northeastern Syria as part of a long-running effort to help Kurdish-led forces there.
