Hong Kong court finds media tycoon and Beijing accused Jimmy Lai of treason, foreign collusion

Jimmy Lai, a former Hong Kong media mogul and critic of Beijing, was found guilty in a nationwide security case in the City Court on Monday, which could have sent him to prison for life.

Three federal judges found LAI, 78, guilty of conspiring with others to join forces with foreign forces to endanger national security and of conspiring to publish inflammatory articles. He pleaded guilty to all charges.

Lai was arrested in August 2020 under Beijing’s security law – imposed following massive anti-government protests in 2019. During the five years in custody, and it seems that there have been fewer and more crimes.

Lai’s trial, held without a jury, was watched closely by the US, Britain, the European Union and political observers such as media freedom and British independence in 1997.

A life sentence is possible

“We should be doing something to help him,” said Lidija Biro, part of the Amnesty International Niagara chapter that is helping to organize a rally in support of the Hong Kong prison. Lai hotels are available in the region. Biro was among others, including his family members and staff, who struck on Wednesday.

During LAI’s 156-day trial, prosecutors accused him of bribery of Apple’s top managers every day and others of asking foreign forces to install other hostile materials in China.

The prosecutor also accused Lai of doing so, highlighting his meetings with US President Mike Pence and First Secretary Mike Pompeo in July 2019 at the height of the protests.

It also presented 161 letters, including Apple’s daily articles, to the court as evidence of a conspiracy to publish the rebuilding materials, as well as social media posts and messages.

‘His spirit is strong but his body fails’

Lai testified for 52 days in his own defense, arguing that he did not want to be solicited from other countries after the cheap security law was imposed in June 2020.

His legal team also clashed with free speech.

As the trial continued, Lahi’s health seemed to decline.

After waiting more than three years in a prison cell, Jimmy Lai stood trial for treason in a Hong Kong Coarroom this week. If found guilty, the 76-year-old could spend the rest of his life in prison. Lai’s lawyers in August told the court that he suffered from heart palpitations. His daughter Claire told the Associated Press that her father became weak and reduced his nails and teeth. Hong Kong’s government said no abnormalities were found during an examination by a doctor who followed Lai’s complaint of heart problems. It added this month that the medical services provided to them were ‘adequate and comprehensive.’

Former Apple daily employee Tammy Cheung arrived at 5 am, and said she wanted to know about Lai’s condition after reports of his health.

He said he felt like the process was being rushed since the date was only announced last Friday, but said, “I’m relieved that this case can be concluded quickly.”

Originally scheduled to begin in December 2022, Lai’s trial was pushed back to December 2023 as authorities barred a British lawyer from representing him, citing national security risks.

In 2022, Lai was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison for various fraud charges involving employment violations at Apple’s daily headquarters. He was also convicted for his roles in unauthorized meetings in other cases related to the 2019 protests.
