Maduro Arrives at the Side of the Infamous MDC Amidst the Streets of Joy

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife are not only in US custody – they now call one of Brooklyn’s most notorious prisons home. The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC Brooklyn) has a reputation that precedes it as it has high names like R. Kelly and Sean “Diddy” Combs, and it’s so popular that some judges have refused to send people there.

Opened in the early 1990s, the facility currently holds about 1,300 inmates, ranging from suspected gangsters and drug dealers to white-collar defendants, and serves as a staging area for people awaiting trial in Manhattan and federal courts in Brooklyn. Despite the ugly walls, Saturday night outside the MDC was quiet. Crowds of Venezuelan immigrants, many with flags, lined the streets to celebrate Maduro’s capture.
