Chipotle distances itself from Bill Ackman after ICE agent surrender

Chipotle has moved away from a billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman after donating to a fundraiser aimed at supporting the ICE agent involved in the shooting of a Minneapolis woman.

The fast-casual restaurant that specializes in burritos, tacos and bowls took to social media site Threads on Monday to post a one-sentence statement to clarify that “Bill Ackman is not affiliated with Chipotle.”

Chipotle moved forward and that post in response to a viral post on Threads that called for a Chipotle boycott and indirectly said that Ackman owns the company in a post saying, “Don’t eat at Chipotle. The guy in charge just gave $10000 to the man who killed Renee Good.”

Ackman’s hedge fund, Pershing Square Capital Management, took a 9.9% stake in Chipotle in 2016, and the billionaire was instrumental in reshaping the company’s strategy but reduced his holdings over time before exiting the stake late last year, a move Chipotle disclosed during an earnings call in November.

The controversy linking Ackman to Chipotle erupted after visitors to a GoFundMe page set up by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer involved in the shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis noticed that a $10,000 donation to the fund was made by William Ackman.

Following speculation about whether it was the outspoken businessman who made the donation, Ackman himself took to social media to confirm that make an offering and explained that he had intended to do the same for Good’s fundraiser but was unable to do so later.

“This whole situation is tragic. A police officer doing his best to do his job, and a protester who may not have intended to kill a police officer but whose actions in a split second led to his death. Our country is stronger when we work together to solve the complex issues that divide us,” Ackman wrote.
