Macy’s to close 14 stores by 2026 amid Bold New Chapter turnaround strategy

Macy’s has announced it is closing more than a dozen additional stores by 2026 as it moves forward with plans to close underperforming locations to boost profits.

About 14 stores are expected to close in the first fiscal quarter as part of its “Bold New Chapter” turnaround strategy, which includes closing about 150 underperforming locations by the end of 2026.

Macy’s CEO Tony Spring, in a letter to employees last week, said the company will continue to review its portfolio, including continuing to close underperforming stores and streamlining operations.

MACY’S TURNOVER SHOWS PROMISE AS SALES RISE TO HIGHEST LEVEL IN OVER 3 YEARS

Macy’s, once a flagship store, was forced to implement a strategy that included closing about 150 stores by the end of 2026, in order to return to “sustainable, profitable sales.”

However, in recent years, Macy’s has been struggling to keep up with the industry’s rapid changes and relentless competition, and its sales began to decline.

While the company continues to close some stores, it is simultaneously investing in its 125 “Reimagine” stores, which are key to its turnaround, and which have seen sales growth.

The company is focused on increasing staffing, store design and customer experience at these 125 locations. Sales at those stores increased 2.7% year-over-year in the third quarter, “attesting to the success of superior merchandising, store design, and customer experience investments,” according to Spring.

HOW MACY’S CAN TURN YOUR BUSINESS AROUND A STORE DOOR

Macy’s turnaround has already shown progress. In December, Macy’s reported that its sales they reached their highest level in more than three years, marking a major step forward in its transformation effort.

Macy’s highlighted two measures of progress in its latest report covering the three-month period ending Nov. 1. Store sales are projected to keep the rose open for the second straight quarter, while Macy’s product-wide sales, including all stores and its website, grew at a faster pace in 13 places.
