Here’s What Happened to Roméca Meeks-Blackmon
On September 8, Roméca Meeks-Blackmon was dropping her six-year-old son off at school in Chicago’s South Loop. According to Justin Carter, Roméca did not know that the father of her child, and his new girlfriend, Quadajah Johnson, were in the area for an “unrelated” reason. Her son’s father, Carlos Smith Sr., had parked nearby to switch cars with Johnson. The women ended up crossing each other, and there was a verbal and physical fight. At one point, Quadajah allegedly pulled out a gun, shooting Roméca in the face and bystanders.
Videos obtained by TSRI show chaos shortly after first responders rushed to the scene and carried the unresponsive victim to Stroger Hospital. However, when he arrived, the medical expert pronounced him dead.
Later, the photo that Roméca posted on his Instagram Stories that morning went viral. She had written a sweet note with her six-year-old son, Carlos Jr.and included it with his lunch. Now, it is the child’s last memory of his mother.
“Happy Monday, son, today is the first start on this and you can start strong,” the note read. Always be yourself. He is the coolest, smartest kid I know. I love you so much and you make me proud. Have a good day. Mom loves you.
Court Records Reveal
Prosecutors are now pursuing the case against Quadajah Johnson. Court records provided more insight into what happened that day. Johnson’s baby, who she shares with Carlos Sr., was in the back seat when the cars were changed. The argument with Roméca Meeks-Blackmon started with words, but according to a witness who was driving, Quadajah approached her while she was stopped. A witness at the bus stop said they saw Carlos swinging the car door at Roméca, trying to close the door of his car. When Quadajah approached, Roméca got out of the car and Carlos put Roméca in a chokehold. When he got out, Quadajah got a gun out of the car, drove towards Roméca and fired the gun several times. Johnson allegedly stood behind the first shot, according to witnesses, before firing again.
Chicago Bills Quadajah Johnson
Three months after the shooting, Quadajah Johnson has been walking free, claiming self-defense at the scene and from police. According to Justin Carter, Quadajah was given a restraining order against Roméca for allegedly threatening Johnson and his family. At that time, women had never met. However, Roméca was not given this order.
On December 3, the Chicago police finally discovered the motive for the crime. Prosecutors have charged Quadajah, 31, with murder. After Johnson’s first court appearance, Carlos Sr. spoke to local reporters about how prosecutors explained the fatal incident.
“…it was unbelievable, but I was there and I know none of this happened the way they described it. But my truth will come out, out here, and I hope everyone understands it.”
A judge denied Quadajah Johnson’s bond request. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 23.
