The Washington, DC, man accused of reducing the sandwich to American culture and tradition insists that the act was done without protest – in the early days of his federal case.
Saan Dunn is facing charges of assault, resisting, opposing, quiet, threatening and interfering with the Associated Press. At the time of the alleged incident, Dunn was employed by the Justice Department as an international affairs specialist in its criminal division.
The charges stem from the accusation phase in which Dunn is accused of throwing a sandwich at Federal Agents at Movember Depend of Having Rogal Guard of Washington, DC, on Aug. 10.
“It doesn’t matter who you are, you just can’t deliver things to people because you’re crazy,” US Assistant Secretary John Parron said at the start of Dunn’s trial on Monday.

While Dunn does not deny that he threw the sandwich at CBP outside the nightclub, his legal team insists it was done as a “statement point” to express his negative feelings about the nation’s capital.
“It was a harmless move to finally exercise his right to free speech,” said defense attorney Julia Gatto. “He is innocent.”
The video of the incident quickly went viral, with Dunn being arrested as a hero by citizens across the city protesting Trump’s move to enter Washington, DC, with Federal Agents.

“He did it. He threw the sandwich,” said Gati. “And now the US attorney in the District of Colombia has turned that moment – the sandwich that was thrown – into a criminal case, a Federal criminal case charging a federal charge.”
However, Parron hit back at Dunn’s Attorney’s claims.
“With respect, it doesn’t mean that this case is going to be that,” Parron said. “You can’t just do what the defendant did here. You crossed the line.”

The grand jury initially refused to forge the count of Felony assault, and the lawyers of Jeanine Pirro finally decided to bring a misdemeanor case against him.
The first State’s Witness, Special Agent Gregory Lairmore, took the stand to explain how the sandwich “exploded” when it hit his chest, hitting him hard enough that he felt it through his ballistic vest.
“You can have onions and mustard,” added Lairmore.

Lairmore testified that he was standing outside a local nightclub with a group of CBP Agents when Dunn approached them, calling the officers “fascists” who were trying to escalate the situation.
“He’s looking down on me. He’s mad at me. Calling me and my teammates all kinds of names,” Lairmore said. “I didn’t answer. That’s his Constitutional right to express his opinion.”

Dunn reportedly fled the scene after throwing the sandwich, but was arrested a few blocks away. During the trial, jurors watched body camera video of Dunn’s arrest.
“I was trying to pull away from there,” Dunn said in the video. “I succeeded.”
