Education Secretary McMahon unveils patriotic ‘History Rocks’

As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday this July 2026, Education Secretary Linda McMahon is focusing on something she says is quietly disappearing in classrooms across the country: patriotism.

In an appearance on FOX Business’ “Mornings with Maria,” McMahon described a national campaign to restore civics education, pride in the American flag, and a common sense of nationalism among America’s youth.

McMahon said too many schools have moved away from teaching the basics of what it means to be an American — from understanding the Constitution to showing respect for national symbols — warning that America’s sense of nationalism is fading fast.

“We don’t teach patriotism. We don’t say the Pledge of Allegiance. We don’t build that sense of patriotism,” he added, adding that in some districts, “the word patriot actually came out of some of our school curriculum.”

McMahon believes that this change has weakened students’ connection to their country and the people around them.

To reverse this growing trend, the Department of Education launched the “History Rocks” tour – a national effort aimed at bringing community, American history, and patriotism back into classrooms.

“We travel across the country with our History Rocks tour, and we focus on community, education and patriotism,” she said.

The program coincides with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, which the Trump administration has positioned as an opportunity for unity rather than another source of division.

As the country nears a historic tipping point, McMahon says rekindling patriotism in schools is as important as improving test scores. For him, teaching students to read, write, and do math is part of the job — teaching them why America matters is more important.

As the nation prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence, McMahon says a sense of unity is more important than ever. Through “History Rocks,” schools can help raise a generation that not only understands where this country came from, but also feels proud to be a part of it – and responsible for moving it forward.
