European countries weigh tariffs as Trump threatens Greenland trade war

European countries are considering plans to raise their tariffs against the US in a trade “bazooka” to counter pressure from President Donald Trump on Monday.

Germany’s finance minister, Lars Klingbeil, laughed at the move on Monday when he spoke to his French counterpart in Berlin. French President Emmanuel Macron also urged the European Union to open its Anti-Coercion Instrument on Monday, called “bazooka”.

“There is a legally established European toolbox to respond to economic allegations with very serious measures. And we should now consider using these measures,” Klingbeil said.

“Everything must be fixed now,” he added. “We are ready to find solutions. We are reaching out, but we are not willing to be disappointed.”

“We always face new provocations. We always face new contradictions, which President Trump wants. And here we Europeans must make it clear that the limit has been reached,” continued Klingbeil.

More than half a dozen European countries warned in a joint statement on Sunday that the threat of tariffs is over Greenland straining transatlantic relations as the White House seeks to pressure its allies into an Arctic island settlement.

Trump threatened on his Truth Social forum to impose a 10% tax on eight European countries unless an agreement is reached on what he calls “a complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

Countries include Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Trump said the 10% tariff would go into effect on February 2nd and could rise to 25% on June 1st.

Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Trump’s post on social media on Saturday.

Kristersson wrote in X that the partners will not be “arrested.”

“Only Denmark and Greenland decide on matters that affect Denmark and Greenland,” he said, adding something else European Union (EU) countries were discussing a coordinated response.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top lawyer, also expressed concern over Trump’s comments, warning that Russia and China are having a “field day” and will benefit from a breakup within NATO.

“If Greenland’s security is at risk, we can solve this within NATO. Tariffs risk impoverishing Europe and the United States and undermining our shared prosperity. “We will also not allow our conflict to distract us from our primary mission of helping end Russia’s war with Ukraine.”
