FDA extends cheese recall over deadly Listeria bacteria contamination

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that the recall of the cheese products has been upgraded to the highest risk category after it tested positive for the potentially deadly bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes.

The Ambriola company first issued a voluntary declaration in November for certain cheese products produced at the company’s facility in West Caldwell, New Jersey, after routine tests confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, bacteria that can cause serious illness and even death, especially in pregnant women, the elderly, young children and people with weakened immune systems.

“Although healthy people may experience temporary symptoms such as high fever, headache, rigors, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women,” the FDA said at the time.
