Google Gemini will power Apple Siri in a new AI partnership announcement

Apple and Google announced Monday that the two tech giants have formed a major multi-year partnership that will power Siri and Google Gemini later this year.

The deal, which will also bring Google’s cloud technology to iPhones, represents a major change in the Apple tech ecosystem, as the tech giant has never relied on another company to power its AI tools.

“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year partnership in which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technologies,” the companies said in a joint statement. “These models will help Apple’s future Intelligence features, including the personal Siri coming this year.”

Apple said the company chose Google’s AI because it best suits their needs, but all Apple AI features will still work in areas controlled by Apple, keeping users’ privacy intact.

While Google’s AI and cloud technologies already drive much of Samsung’s Galaxy AI, the deal will open up another area of the massive market dominated by Apple, which has more than a billion active users worldwide.

The deal represents a major breakthrough for Google, which has been racing to compete with early successes of OpenAI, including Apple’s 2024 partnership with ChatGPT that allowed Siri to communicate with AI with specific questions.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who also founded his AI company xAI and has been trying to compete with other big players in the industry, responded to the agreement in a post on X on Monday, saying that the partnership gives Google more influence over users and the Internet.

“This seems like an absurd concentration of power for Google, since (they) also have Android and Chrome,” Musk said.
