Oregon tops US immigration survey with 65 percent inbound moves in new report

Heritage Foundation chief economist EJ Antoni breaks down the October and November jobs reports, highlighting job losses among government officials and foreign-born workers in ‘The Bottom Line.’
Economic headwinds, particularly in the job market, have driven “significant changes in America’s migration patterns,” according to United Van Lines’ 49th Annual National Movers Study.
The study, published last week, revealed that there is still a movement of people from the colder parts of the North and Midwest to the warmer parts of the South and West.
Oregon topped this year’s list, with the highest percentage of immigrants, with 65% coming from within the state. The remaining 35% are commuters, according to the data. Oregon became the most popular state for immigrants looking for work. About 36% of the movers were people seeking opportunities in the growing fields of technology and healthcare.
The Eugene-Springfield metro has the most internal traffic. Springfield, in particular, offers a lower cost of living than other Oregon metros and is very close to Eugene and Portland.

Migration patterns are primarily driven by the desire to be closer to family, followed by the job market, according to the report. However, aside from job opportunities, Realtor.com chief economist Joel Berner said the biggest trend among states attracting more inbound movers is affordability.

“This is well evidenced by half of the top income states around California while the Golden State registers as the best,” Berner said.
He added that immigrants looking for a low cost of living combined with many job opportunities are heading to growing states like Oregon and South Carolina, where homes are affordable and job opportunities are increasing.

While Oregon is home to many of the highest-paying tech jobs, Berner noted that South Carolina is already a major manufacturing state.

In comparison, more citizens left New Jersey than any other state for the eighth year in a row. About 62% of government-related initiatives involve expatriate citizens. But about 21% of those moving to New Jersey were people aged 18-34, as the state is considered a “launch state” for young families and those looking to start careers.

New Jersey, according to Berner, has seen the strongest price growth compared to the rest of the country. This could be attractive to older Americans who may be able to take advantage of the opportunity to sell their home at a higher price and retire elsewhere, including South Carolina.
