From Online Drama to Deadly Violence
According to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, 24-year-old Antawan Benson was sentenced Monday to 67 years in prison for his role in a mass shooting in the Dayton area. Benson was convicted earlier this month of murder. Additional charges include discharging a firearm in a residence, aggravated assault, and aggravated menacing. The sentence stems from the August 2024 shooting that claimed Isabella’s life.
Prosecutors say the violence was sparked by a social media post about Benson’s cousin. On August 22, 2024, Benson and his brother, Javen Conner, allegedly approached a woman who was sitting in her car in Trotwood to confront her about the position. Another woman and several children were also inside the car. Although no shots were fired during the encounter, authorities say the situation escalated hours later in a very painful way.
Midnight Gunshots End Little Girl’s Life
Shortly after 12:30 a.m. on August 23, Benson and Conner allegedly opened fire on three separate homes using an AK-47 and an AR-15, peppering the residences with bullets. Inside one of those houses was Isabella, a seventh grader sleeping in her bedroom. The first reported that he died at the scene after the police rushed to the house following reports of gunshots.
While handing down the sentence, Judge Gerald Parker spoke directly to Benson, emphasizing the irreparable harm caused by his actions. According to court reports, the judge noted that the evidence suggests that Isabella did not die instantly, describing the information as “eater of intestines.” Parker also criticized Benson and Conner for allegedly posting pictures of empty gun magazines on Facebook after the incident. He also called this act “false heroism” and publicly criticizing behavior on the bench.
Family Mourns for Isabella, Justice Continues to Be Served
Isabella Carlos’ family also spoke to the court, putting a human face on this loss. His body described him as “a beautiful and wise lady,” full of promise. His aunt, Donnetta Dewberry, spoke tearfully about the moments of the future that were stolen from her nephew—prom, first love, first dates, and just growing up. While expressing pain and anger, Dewberry also offered a message of faith, asking God to have mercy on the brothers despite the damage they have done. He was sentenced on January 8.
