Supreme Court stops bid to end same-sex marriage rights

The Supreme Court is not planning to ban same-sex marriage nationwide, despite calls to do so. On Monday (November 10), it declined to overrule its landmark 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, Enrollment in Law. Human rights activist Kelley Robinson praised the decision to ‘not intervene.

“The Supreme Court made it clear today that refusing to respect the legal rights of others comes without consequences,” said Robinson.

Who wants to be ruled in homosexual marriages?

The judges, without comment, turned away the appeal from Kim Davis. He is the Kentucky court clerk who issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples after the 2015 ruling. He got a lot of national attention in Eastern Kentucky’s Rowan County when he turned his back on gay couples. Davis said that his faith prevented him from complying with the Supreme Court’s decision. For that reason, he ignored court orders to issue licenses. As a result, a federal judge dropped him in contempt of court in September 2015. He was released after his staff issued licenses on his behalf, but removed his name from the form.

How did Kim Davis end up on the Supreme Court?

After the Davis case, the Kentucky legislature then passed a law removing the names of county clerks from state marriage licenses. He lost his re-election bid in 2018. Since then, Kim Davis has been trying to get the Supreme Court to overturn the lower court’s order to pay $360,000 in alimony.

Here’s how the top cases stand

Kim Davis’ attorneys have repeatedly called for names Justice Clarence Thomas. Thomas is the only one of the nine judges who asked to overturn same-sex marriage. In addition, Thomas was among the four controversial judges in 2015. Judge John John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito they are some of the opponents in court today. Roberts has been silent on the matter since writing the dissenting opinion in the case. Alito continued to criticize the decision, but recently said he wasn’t offering to be overturned.

Currently, Justice Amy Coney Barrett He said there are times when the court has to correct mistakes and reverse decisions, as happened in the 2022 case that ended the constitutional right to abortion. Barrett was not on the court in 2015, but suggested that same-sex marriage could be a separate category than abortion. He said people rely on the decision of the high court when they get married and have children.
