Tinder to require facial recognition scanning for new US users

Tinder announced today that identity verification and facial recognition will now be required for all new users in the US in the coming months.

A facial scanner has already been required for new tinder users in California since July this year. New users in Colombia, Canada, Australia, India, and several countries throughout Southeast Asia must also complete one according to the release of the dating app. Match group, Tinder’s parent company and dating app, confirmed the claim that this requirement extends to the rest of us

To complete the verification, called Face Check, users must take a video of themselves within the app. This is to ensure that the person is real and their face matches their profile picture. It also means that the same face is used in multiple profiles. If verified, users receive a verified photo badge.

The selfies and videos were removed shortly after the update, and the PAID PAVE of ONE PAVE is installed and stored to verify new photos and detect fake or multiple accounts.

Tinder has apparently seen a more than 60 percent drop in exposure to bad actors, including spam, scams, and fake accounts. (This figure is based on a weighted random sample of the app’s profile views.) Early use of face check led to a more than 40 percent reduction in bad actor reports.

Face verification is the next evolution of verification methods introduced in previous years, including photo verification in 2021, video verification in 2023, and ID verification last year.

Security has been an ongoing issue, with many things being done for accounts on dating apps. Earlier this year, an investigation into the game’s team reported that it had not taken steps to properly prevent harmful users or warn the law.

In September, two Americans wrote a letter to Tinder and the group’s matchmaker, Spencer Rascoff, urging him to take action against Romance Scammers on the apps.

RascOff said in a press release that the facial recognition reflects the company’s “deep commitment” to responsible travel that builds trust and supports a healthy, growing community. ”

“It’s just the beginning of a broader effort to create the best and safest way to meet new people,” rascOff continued.

The widespread acceptance of face checks also comes months after the UK passed its own age verification law, forcing applications to include Age checks.
