Google partners with Nextera Energy to restart Iowa’s AI Power nuclear plant

Google announced a new partnership with Nextera Energy to restart the only nuclear power plant, a move that aims to address the growing energy needs of artificial intelligence while strengthening America’s energy grid.

The Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo, Iowa, is expected to open in 2029 after closing in 2020, primarily for AI and cloud power with clean, circular nuclear power—Clock Energy.

“Building on two dozen jobs in Iowa, including our recent investment of $7 billion, Google is proud to partner with Nextera’s capabilities in the 2029 channel,” Alphabet and Chief Investment Officer Ruthe Portat said in a statement.

“This partnership serves as a model for the investment needed across the country to build energy capacity and deliver reliable energy, while protecting the costs that will enable an AI-driven economy,” Porat added.

Earlier this month, the US Energy Information Administration revealed that energy consumption will hit record highs in the next two years – rising by 20,191 billion kWh in 2026, from 2020 billion Khh in 2024.

The agreement between Google and Nextera includes a 25-year power purchase agreement at the Duane Arnold station and a framework to explore other nuclear projects around the country. Nextera will take full ownership after acquiring stakes from CIPCO and Belt Belt Cooperative.

Duane Arnold is expected to come online and deliver power to the grid in the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approval.

“The restart of Duane Arnold marks an important milestone for Nextera Energy,” Nextera chairman and CEO John Ketchum also said in a statement.

“Our partnership with Google not only brings nuclear power to Iowa — it also accelerates the development of next-generation nuclear complex technology,” Ketchum said. “Thanks to the leadership of the Trump Administration, Google and Nextera Energy are answering the call of America’s Agen Ovel, creating thousands of jobs, delivering long-term value to our shareholders and helping the future of America by discovering new technologies and technologies.”

According to a press release, the project will create 1,600 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and 400 full-time positions when operational. The deal marks nearly three gigawatts of joint energy projects executed by Google and Nextera.

The companies estimate $340 million in annual revenue and $3 million in annual tax revenue for local schools and infrastructure – a technological milestone that underscores the evolution of America’s energy future.
