Zelenskyy wanted weapons, which would allow Ukrainian forces to eat deep into Russian territory and focus on key military sites, power centers and important infrastructure. Zelenskyy argued that such leverage would help force Putin to take Trump’s calls for direct talks to end direct talks.

But Putin warned Trump during the phone call that providing Kyiv with Tomahawks “will not change the situation on the battlefield, but it can cause serious damage to relations between our countries,” according to yuri USHAKOV, a foreign policy adviser.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Symbiha said the talk of providing Tomahawks was already serving a purpose by pressuring Putin into negotiations. “The conclusion is that we need to continue with strong measures. Power can really make a push for peace,” said Sybiha on the social platform X after months in the evening.

He looked at the strategy on Thursday in meetings with energy secretary Chris Wright and the heads of American energy companies, leading him to send energy infrastructure to Ukraine after the attack on Russian energy and to increase “the presence of American businesses in Ukraine.”

It is the fourth face-to-face meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy since the Republican returned to office in January, and the second in less than a month.

Trump announced following Thursday’s phone call with Putin that he would soon meet with the Russian leader in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss ways to end the war. Both also acknowledged that their top aides, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were meeting next week at an undisclosed location.

The President said it is “decided” if Zelenskyy is involved in the Hungarian negotiations – suggesting a “double meeting” with the leaders of the ruling countries is probably the most effective way of effective talks.

“The two leaders don’t like each other, and we want to make it comfortable for everybody,” Trump said.

Before his phone call with Putin, Trump had shown signs of growing frustration with the Russian leader.

Last month, he announced that he believed that Ukraine can win all the lost territory of Russia, a surprising change that appears to require repeated Kyivs to end the war.

Trump, returning to his 2024 campaign, insisted that he would immediately end the war, but his efforts at peace seemed to finally follow the August blitz in August, when he held a summit with Putin in Alaska and a meeting of Zelenskyy and his European allies.

Trump emerged from those meetings convinced that he was on the way to arranging direct talks between Zelenskyy and Putin. But the Russian leader has never shown any interest in meeting Zelenskyy and Moscow is only intensifying its crackdown on Ukraine.

Asked if he was worried that Putin was hitting him in the neck, Trump admitted that it was possible but said he hoped he would be able to handle the Russian leader.

Trump said: “I played my whole life with all of them, and I came out well,” Trump said. He added, “I think I’m good at this.”
