Urban Arrested, Ehlers Use Probation In Baby Sale

According to reports, 22-year-old Darien Urban recently pleaded guilty to one count of attempted bribery. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a separate charge of endangering the welfare of a minor. Judge Brad Karren sentenced the father to three years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Judge Karren also added a further three-year, suspended sentence.

Shalene Ehlers, 21, the child’s mother, received a lesser sentence. He pleaded guilty to both charges—attempting to receive compensation and endangering the welfare of a child. However, the judge refused to accept his request. Instead, he was placed on state supervised probation for six years, a decision that could wipe his criminal record if he successfully completes it.

The story takes an unusual twist with the role of alcohol. Ehlers allegedly asked another couple for beer in the morning. When they refused, a man named Ricky Crawford offered beer if he would babysit for the night. Crawford, who was reportedly drunk, was part of the handoff that eventually led to the contract with Martin. Investigators say the actions of Urban and Ehlers constituted “high risk of death or serious physical injury” to a baby that was left by strangers because they were promised beer and money.
