Donald Slams BBC For “Cruel Portrayal” Of Him

Donald Trump’s 33-page lawsuit accuses the BBC of broadcasting a “you are a false, defamatory, manipulative, defamatory, inflammatory, and disgusting President Trump.” In addition, the lawsuit seeks an expungement “a bold attempt to disrupt and influence” 2024 US presidential election.

Specifically, he accused the BBC of “combining two separate parts of President Trump’s speech on January 6, 2021” to “deliberately distort the meaning of what President Trump said.”

Trump filed his lawsuit in a Florida court following threats to do so. The deadline to bring the case to the British courts expired more than a year ago. He is seeking $5 billion in defamation damages and an additional $5 billion for unfair trade practices.

Donald Trump said earlier on Monday that he was suing the BBC “by putting words in my mouth.”

“Actually, they put terrible words in my mouth related to Jan. 6 that I didn’t say, and they are good words, which I said, right?” said the president unprompted when he appeared in the Oval Office. “They are good words, they talk about patriotism and all the good things I said.

What did the BBC do to the speech?

Trump’s speech took place before some of his supporters stormed the US Capitol. At the time, Congress was preparing to confirm the victory of President-elect Joe Biden in the 2020 election, which Trump lied about (and continues to say) was stolen from him.

Flash forward to 2024, days before the 2024 US presidential election. The BBC has chosen to broadcast an hour-long documentary, ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’ As Trump’s lawsuit states, the media has combined three quotes from two parts of the 2021 speech. Donald had delivered quotes about an hour apart, but the documentary made it seem like it was one quote. In that arrangement, Trump urged supporters to march with him and “fight like hell.” Among the parts cut by the BBC is a part where Donald says he wants fans to demonstrate peacefully.

Broadcaster Plans to Be Applauded for Claims

However, the BBC is not going down without a fight! According to the Associated Press, the media said they would defend the case.

“We cannot comment on ongoing legal action,” the statement said.

Despite declining to comment further, this is not the first time the BBC has covered Donald’s Jan speech. 6. Last month, the broadcaster apologized to President Trump for editing the speech. However, the publicly funded BBC has denied allegations that it defamed Donald after threatening legal action.

There has already been some effect of the arrangement of the speech. BBC chairman Samir Shah called it “an error of judgement.” In response, the BBC’s chief executive and its news director resigned.

Can The Donald Really Sue The BBC Over Its Content?

According to AP, legal experts brought possible challenges to the US case given that the documentary was not shown in the country. But, the lawsuit says people in the US can watch original BBC content. That includes the ‘Panorama’ series, which includes a documentary. To view the content, Americans can subscribe to the BritBox streaming platform or virtual private network service.
