Zohran Mamdani’s campaign found out how to use fandom

New Zohran Mamdani The York City Mayor’s campaign has set a new standard for how Democrats can communicate online.

It is this digital and authentic engagement with social media platforms that pundits across the political world called Mamdani’s truemhant and decided victory on Tuesday night. From the beginning, his group outdid his opponents on the Internet, publishing highly produced videos that reached a large audience.

But that’s only part of the story. Much of Mamdani’s online content does not just come from his campaign, although a number of political influencers have been invited to cover it. It comes from his followers.

For the past few months, the feed has been filled with fancams, fan art, and reveal videos and more and Mamdani, but it’s a brother he. This form of Internet participation has traditionally been reserved for celebrities and artists such as Taylor Swift or pop icons. The young voters who came out to support Mamdani at rallies this week grew up engaging with their favs online in these ways, creating something unusual for the 34-year-old Mayor – a fandom.

“They’re using their experiences in online fandom to do politics,” said Dr. Ashley Hink, an associate professor at Xavier University who teaches digital media and online communication. “Those are the skills to share with culture and that means those are the skills we use to share with politics.”

The Mamdani campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This fandom doesn’t look like political ratings. The Internet, clips of Mamdani talking about the gatherings and influences get a suspension of the strong video post set in the Jay-ZAY-EMPIRE “East Digital artists have sent their videos drawing Mamdani on their lines. Mamdani’s own campaign Quign, like when he taught the opponent Andrew Cuomo how to pronounce his last name, organized in the name of the campaign.

Unlike many political parties of late, the formality of the Mamdani Campaign Media campaign was to avoid content generated by AI and to focus on popular sound styles, becoming a rare source of material in an administration filled with slop. While other Democratic officials post online to generate authenticity with voters, Mamdani, voters say, is just showing off. He uses social media as seriously as he brings up issues like housing and affordability. This approach provides his audience with something tangible that they can interact with online in their own language, building a community around Mamdani that exists online and in real life.

Ravi Mangla says: “He promotes those cultures that are close to him, while he himself always has a kind of laser focus on politics, on this campaign, and on the real issues that people are facing.”
